Scientists and designers! /

This week we have mixed up Year 5 classes and have covered science topics. We have looked at the classification system, different life cycles and have now moved on to focus on plants. At the beginning of the week we looked at the life cycle of a plant and discussed the different stages: such as germination, pollination and seed dispersal. We then continued to look at the process of pollination and how this fertilises a seed. After looking at this in detail and identifying the different parts, we decided to design a model which would show the process of pollination occurring.

The children worked in pairs or groups and used a variety of resources (magnets, paper clips, paper cups, and tubes) to create a model that would represent the process of pollination occurring. They had to use their scientific knowledge to represent the different parts of the plant.

What was your favourite part of today’s lesson? Can you remember the different parts of the plant?

Here are some pictures of us in the process of creating our models!

Revision, Revision, Revision /

In maths this week we have been revising and practising our skills ready for assessments next week. We have been working hard to answer some challenging questions based on percentages, fractions, balancing equations and multi-step problems.

For your homework this week, you will be revising three particular areas of maths. These games will focus on: fractions, decimals and percentages; converting between units of measure and rounding and place value.

Remember to keep practising your times tables and follow the links below so that you can find the games:

What do you still find challenging?

Has your confidence improved after playing these games?

Maths Masters! /

This week in maths we have been calculating addition and subtraction problems, including decimals and worded problems.

We have also needed to use our algebra skills this morning to try and rescue Miss Griffin and Ziggy from a cave! Hopefully you navigated your way around the maps correctly and I’m currently sending her the answers so she can find her way back! If your answers were correct then Miss Griffin will be back on Monday.

Your homework this week is to practise addition and subtraction involving decimals using the game Hotel Decimalfornia!

Let me know how you get on with these and if your confidence grows

Investigating ratio, proportion and algebra through sweets /

This week in maths we have been investigating ratio, proportion and algebra for Gobstoppers sweet shop. We have looked at how to simplify ratio, solve proportion as a fraction. Towards the end of the week we have investigated algebra equations and how to solve these when we have missing values.

For your homework this week you need to follow the link to the website below. Either go on Alginon’s Algebra or the Algebra quiz. Let me know how you find these games by commenting.

Class 12 Maths Homework /

This week in maths we have been investigating area and volume of shapes, so that we can create a new LEGOLAND building.

Homework for this week is to design your LEGOLAND building. You need to investigate the area of the 2D shapes you use and also the volume.

Post your photos of your design if you try to create it at home!
