LIRA: HCPS’s guide to identifying and answering different reading comprehension question types

This document is HCPS’s quick guide to solving reading comprehension questions. If you read through this poster it will explain the different question types you may come across in a reading comprehension assessment: literal, inference, reader response and author intent. As well as helping you to identify the type of question, this framework gives you pointers on how to begin answering these types of questions.

Short Multiplication Method (2 by 1 digit)

Short Multiplication Method (3 by 2 digits)

We use the short multiplication method, listen here to Finley & Daniel as they explain how to solve 3 by 2 digit multiplication problems. The key difference between this and 2 by 1 digit multiplication is that there is two rows of multiplication and at the end of this you need to add your answers together.

Times Table Rockstars

Children at HCPS have been given a login to grant them access to Times Tables Rock Stars online. Times Table Rock Stars is a fun learning resource which encourages children to practice their times table facts from 1-12 whilst either competing against themselves or other children online. Teachers are also able to arrange a ‘battle of the bands’ this involves a competition between the classes involved. As children complete challenges online

Y5 Calculation Policy
