Year 2 have been learning all about the history of trains today. We visited Elsecar Heritage Centre to see the steam trains and learn all about them. The volunteers at Elsecar were working very hard painting and repairing the old trains. We saw the driver shovelling the coal into the fire box, it looked really hard and dirty work. We stood on the bridge and watched the train go by, the driver blew the steam whistle and covered us all in steam and smoke.
What did you learn about trains today?
I’m glad you enjoyed it Ryan. I loved it when we were on the bridge and the train driver blew steam all over us as he went underneath. Did you spot the trains named after the historical families from Hoyland? There was the Earl of Stratford , can you remember any of the others?
Mrs Harrison I know when the first train was invented in 1804.
Gabby, I wonder if we could plot how trains have changed over time somehow? Have you got any ideas how we could show this clearly? My clue is Historians use these a lot and we use something similar with calculations in maths!
My favratiet part was when we went up lots of steps and watched the Mardy Monster come under us and blew her wissel and covering us in stinky steam.
I liked it because we got to sit in a carriage and look were the guard sits both ways and we got to go in first class area.
We had a good view up on the bridge didn’t we Daisy. Ryan can you remember which famous fictional train everyone said the first class carriages reminded them of?

Exactly right Gabby. It’s a bit like a number line we use in Numeracy isn’t it, you can put things in order on a timeline.

I loved it because we got to lern all about the mardy monster.I loved seeing the mardy monster go up and down.It was lots of fun sitting in a carige and looking inside the mardy monster.I loved today and Im glad that we went on that trip because we got to see all the steem trains and i loved today.
