A brief introduction to Y3/4 and how our classes will run.

Workings of the school day-

Children are encouraged to be as independent as possible however please don’t see this as you are not allowed in the classroom, if you ever want to discuss something with us just pop in and we can discuss what you need. The KS2 cloakrooms are VERY small! This means that we encourage children to only bring in what they need as there is limited space to store anything. Book bags can come into the classroom and lunch boxes will be stored on a book shelf outside in the corridor to try and make the most of the space we have! Children do not need to bring toys or objects into school, unless they are part of their homework tasks.

In Y3/4 we set for Maths, this means that your child will be grouped with children of similar abilities so that their needs can be addressed and teaching can be pitched to an appropriate level. All 3 class teachers plan closely together each week which means each class accesses the same experiences throughout the year.

Homework and Homework Diaries- Homework diaries need to be in school every day. Regular homework will be sent home on a Friday and need to be handed in by the following Thursday, this gives us time to mark it before sending out the new piece. Homework diaries need to be in school everyday as your child’s maths teacher may set homework on any day. Homework diaries need signing on a weekly basis, this will be checked on a Monday. There is a prize awarded to the class who have the most signed Homework Diaries handed in so it is important for the class that they are all in! In classes 7, 8 and 9 we are going to be trialling a Homework Loyalty card, for each piece of completed homework your child returns to school they will receive a stamp, for each 10 stamps there will be a treat awarded! Homework either consolidates learning for the week or provides and opportunity for the children to do some pre-learning to prepare them for the following week so it is important for children to complete tasks- they are meaningful not pointless and will help your child make the progress they deserve during the year!

Reading Logs- For each day your child reads and their reading log is filled in, like in KS1, they receive stamp. These stamps add up to reading prizes, these stamps are continued from KS1. A minimum of 3 reads per week are expected however the more reads the children do the better progress they make. We realise that children and their families have commitments out of school but we really do appreciate every effort from home.

PE- PE will be on a Wednesday however this may change so it is helpful if everyone has a full PE kit in everyday. This needs to include suitable clothing and foot ware for PE outdoors. You child will have a sequence of 10 weekly sessions of swimming during the year, this is part of their PE curriculum.

PE kit order form available here!

Blog- The school website is used a that vital link between home and school. It is a huge celebration tool for those successes children have in school put also as a anchor for home learning. It is great to see children learning at school but it is a massive achievement if children come home and share their learning with you and this is what is so good to see on the blog! It is a chance for children to have their say and blog but also for you! Children love to see comments and questions from their parents on the blog and so do we!

Summer Tasks- There are 2 main tasks for over the summer, we realise it is a time for lots of fun and hopefully these tasks will help you show us the fun you are having!

Summer Writing Journal- Use this simply as a diary or a space for creative writing! Think about everything that makes a good piece of writing and your target, use it as a space to show off what you can do!

Summer Extreme Reading Challenge- A photographic competition for the most obscure and entertaining place that the pupils and staff can be caught reading. Take photos of weird and wonderful places that you have read throughout the summer and post them onto the extreme reading blog! Update our interactive book shelf so we can see which books have been read over the summer! You could even post a review to recommend a book for others to read!
