It has been another great week at Hoyland Common Primary School and the buzz and excitement has certainly continued. This week we saw the first of the schools sporting events and all the children in KS1 and KS2 took part in a Cross Country event which for once was completed in the glorious sunshine!

Pupils in Y5/6 became historians for the afternoon on Wednesday investigating a wide range of World War 1 artefacts which were kindly loaned from the Imperial War Museum in Manchester, ready for their visit their next week.
Pupils in Y1, using the map Mrs Harrison found floating in a bottle in the sea in Whitby have found some buried treasure and we are all looking forward to finding out what was in the treasure chests!

A whole host of afterschool clubs started this week, cookery, film club, cricket, football, multi skills, drama, singing and dance to name but a few. It was great to see so many children attending, if your child is interested please do enquire as there are still some places available.

This week is the first week of dining with the stars, for those of you who don’t know, one pupil from each class is selected weekly to be ‘star of the week’, usually for doing something a little above or beyond. They get the star treatment at lunch time, waiter service and a weekly special guest to dine with them. This week’s stars of the week were selected for having a fantastic attitude and effort in the first 2 weeks, brilliant effort in writing and literacy, being helpful and kind to other children and a great contribution to class discussion.

Looking to next week there is an ‘Understanding phonics” meeting for parents of children in Y1 on Monday after school. Please do come along and find out how you can support your child in the early stages of reading and what is involved in the phonics screening check at the end of Y1.

Its also a busy week for School Trips, on Tuesday Y3/4 pupils are off to Cadbury World as part of the topic on Chocolate and I hope they manage to bring a few samples back! Y2 pupils are visiting Magna on Wednesday and Y5/6 pupils are going to the Imperial War Museum in Manchester on Thursday. I’m looking forward to hearing about what they find out and learn.

Attendance this week was a fantastic 97.1%, what a great start to the term, let’s keep it going, as I said it has such a positive impact on children’s learning progress. As ever if you have any issues or concerns about your child’s education please do not hesitate to contact me or any member of the Hoyland Common Primary School team.

And finally HCPS is the school of the week on Hallam FM next week, please do listen in to find out more! Thank you for your ongoing support.
