Intent

At Hoyland Common Primary School, we believe that high-quality Physical Education inspires all children to succeed and develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to lead healthy, active lives. Our PE curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure pupils build and develop fundamental movement skills, teamwork, resilience and a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.

Our curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and supported by HCAT progression documents, ensuring knowledge and skills are taught progressively from EYFS through to Year 6. Lessons are designed to be engaging, inclusive and ambitious, providing opportunities for all pupils to participate, achieve and excel regardless of their starting points.

Through PE, we aim to develop not only physical competence but also important life skills such as cooperation, determination, leadership, respect and self-belief. Children are encouraged to challenge themselves, reflect on their performance and understand the importance of physical activity for both their physical and mental wellbeing.

Our PE curriculum is organised around six key areas which are revisited and developed throughout a child’s journey at HCPS:

  • Games
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Athletics
  • Swimming
  • Outdoor and Adventurous Activities

These areas are underpinned by the core themes of Health and Fitness, Sporting Values and Conduct, and Evaluating and Improving Performance, ensuring children develop a well-rounded understanding of physical education and sport.

Wider Opportunities

At HCPS, we are proud to offer a wide range of sporting opportunities beyond the classroom. These experiences allow children to apply the skills learned in PE lessons, develop confidence and enjoy representing their school.

Children are encouraged to participate in a variety of extra-curricular clubs, competitions and festivals throughout the year. Opportunities may include:

  • Multi-skills
  • Football
  • Cricket
  • Boccia
  • Dance
  • Gymnastics
  • Athletics
  • Cross-country events

We work closely with local schools and sporting organisations to provide opportunities for competitive and inclusive sport. Through these experiences, children develop teamwork, resilience and sportsmanship while celebrating personal and collective success.

We are extremely proud of our pupils’ participation and achievements in sporting events and remain committed to ensuring every child has access to a broad range of physical activities.

Implementation

PE is taught as a discrete subject and follows a progressive sequence of learning across school. Lessons are designed using the principles of the Accelerated Learning Cycle, promoting active participation, challenge and opportunities for pupils to demonstrate and apply their learning.

Within each unit, children:

  • Learn and develop new skills.
  • Practise and refine those skills.
  • Apply their skills in increasingly challenging situations.
  • Evaluate and improve their own performance and that of others.

Learning is carefully structured to ensure pupils build upon prior knowledge and develop competence across a range of physical activities. Teachers provide opportunities for children to work independently, collaboratively and competitively, enabling them to develop both physical and personal skills.

Alongside curriculum lessons, pupils benefit from swimming provision, extra-curricular clubs, sporting competitions and wider enrichment opportunities that promote healthy and active lifestyles.

Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum is measured through ongoing assessment and observation of pupils’ learning and development.

Teachers regularly assess children’s progress throughout lessons, adapting learning where necessary to ensure all pupils are challenged and supported appropriately. Assessment focuses on the development of skills, knowledge, participation and the application of learning.

Evidence of learning is collected through observations, pupil voice and recorded outcomes, helping teachers monitor progress across each unit. Summative assessments are recorded using INSIGHT, enabling leaders to identify strengths, address any gaps in learning and ensure progression across the curriculum.

Through our PE curriculum, pupils leave HCPS with:

  • Increased confidence and physical competence.
  • A positive attitude towards physical activity and sport.
  • An understanding of healthy lifestyles and wellbeing.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and competitively.
  • The resilience, determination and sporting values needed for future success.

Adaptations

At HCPS, we have high expectations for all pupils, including those with SEND. We believe every child should be able to access, enjoy and succeed in PE.

Teachers carefully consider individual needs and make adaptations to teaching, whilst maintaining the ambition and integrity of the curriculum. Adaptations are tailored to individual pupils and may include:

  • Breaking learning into smaller, manageable steps.
  • Pre-teaching key vocabulary and concepts.
  • Providing additional modelling and demonstrations.
  • Using visual supports and prompts.
  • Adjusting equipment, space or groupings where appropriate.
  • Providing opportunities for additional practice and consolidation.

Our approach ensures that all pupils can participate meaningfully in PE lessons, develop their skills and experience success. Adaptations focus on how learning is delivered rather than reducing the curriculum content, helping every child to make progress and achieve their full potential.
