Syllables – The beat of our language!
Try clapping in time with the main sounds of your name as you say it… Mis – ter Has – tey (clap) (clap) (clap) (clap)
These main sounds, usually the parts containing a vowel sound are what we call SYLLABLES.
Some names have only one vowel sound in them so have only one syllable. For example Jack and Sam. Others can have a lot more, like Mad – i – son which has three.
Can you create a sentence where all of the words have the same amount of syllables? Maybe try a sentence with only one syllable words, or is it harder to create a sentence with all 4 syllable words?
Example:
Tommy’s looking very sleepy because Lucy didn’t finish playing guitar until midnight.
How many syllables have the words in my sentence got?

Jack
Your sentence has two syllables in each word.
Charlie enjoys writing stories about scary witches catching little children.
