The Weird and Wonderful!

Biology is the science concerned with the study of life.

Scientific evidence suggests that life on Earth began around 3.5 billion years ago. Back then the forms of life were very simple. One celled organisms. But through natural selection and successive generations adapting to their environment these simple life forms evolved into the wide array of life we have at present day.

And many of them are so fantastically weird and wonderful you wouldn’t believe they were real!

panda-ant

The Panda Ant – this is actually a wingless wasp.

Parrotfish

The Parrot Fish – that nasty looking parrot like beak helps it to eat coral.

star nosed mole

The Star Nosed Mole – that super nose makes up for it being almost blind.

blue sea slug

The blue dragon – a type of blue sea slug, its true name is Glaucus Atlanticus.

narwhal

The Narwhal – I wonder why it’s known as the unicorn of the sea?

saiga antelope

The Saiga Antelope – a face only a mother could love.

giant coconut crab

The Giant Coconut Crab – these alien looking crabs live on islands but thankfully not ours!

harlequin frog

The Harlequin Frog – as well as looking fantastic at a disco the ‘toads’ psychedelic colour scheme warns predators of how poisonous it is.

So many more weird and wonderful animals out there. But I’ll leave those for you to find. Let me know about any strange ones you come across.

Y1R’s weird and wonderful animals

After looking through the fantastic animals above Y1R researched some of their own… Wow they are weird!

ayeaye

The Aye-aye – you might notice that one of its fingers is thinner than the others, the Aye-aye uses it to pick bugs out of their burrows in trees and logs.

dumbo-octopus

The Dumbo Octopus – this (cute?) octopus gets its name from a resemblance to the famous Disney character.

naked mole rat

The Naked Mole Rat – these exceptionally ugly rodents live in colonies similar to bees where one queen rat rules over all the rest.
