Look what turned up at HCPS today!

Mrs Moxon has just burst into the classroom to tell us about her great discovery.

“I was working in the cyber cafe with some children when I turned I saw a dog out of the corner of my eye. As I approached the dog it ran off which was when I noticed the deep hole it had dug! In the bottom of the hole I found this…”

The box contained lots of really old documents from World War 2. We found out that some of the documents were dated 1944. The box had things that would be special to the person who put them in there, they had made a Time Capsule. What would you put in a time capsule? What is special to you?

I have researched the box with my grandad and the box is a 30calibre M19/ A1 ammunition box, which was used for keeping 200 bullets for a machine gun!!

8th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

Wow Callum! That’s amazing. Which website did you use to find that out? Your Grandad must be great at researching things. I would never have thought you could get 200 bullets in that box.

We were very excited when Mrs Moxon found the box. We opened it and found lots of interesting things inside. We decided to research it, we used Google to find out more.

I have got some adjectives for the box.
Rusty, old, dirty
The hinges were squeaky.

8th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

Well done Amelia. Why do you think the hinges were squeaky?

9th Jan, 2014

Amelia d

I think the hinges were squeaky because it had been buried for 70 years. They are rusty and were probably sticky and hard to open.

8th Jan, 2014

Lily l

The ammunition box is stinky because it has been under ground for 70 years.

8th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

You’re right Lily. We worked out it must be about 70 years old. Can you remember what event was happening around then?

9th Jan, 2014

finlay

When a house got crashed down a lady found something. I used past tense.

9th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

You did use past tense Finlay. Well done!

9th Jan, 2014

The A.P.R badge is from 1949.

9th Jan, 2014

9th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

It was dusty when the mud dried Erin.

9th Jan, 2014

Jessica F

These are the numbers I found 1944 ,1945 ,1939 and 1940

9th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

They were the dates we found on the documents this afternoon weren’t they. The box must be at least 70 years old then.

9th Jan, 2014

lucy

The ammuntion box is rusty because it is about 70 years ago.

9th Jan, 2014

13th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

I don’t know if I would like living in a school Jude it wouldn’t feel very cosy at night. What do you think?

10th Jan, 2014

Harry

I think that the ammunition box is very rusty and old because it has been under ground for 70 year’s. It is also very dirty.

13th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

It is very dirty Harry. My fingers were all dusty when we opened it.

10th Jan, 2014

Amelia d

Old adjectives:
rusty
smelly

13th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

Can you remember why the ammunition box was rusty Amelia? What was it made of?

12th Jan, 2014

Evie

The ammunition box is very moldy and rusty on the outside. Some of the papers are ripped. There were 200 gun bullies in it.

13th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

We didn’t find any bullets in it though Evie. I wonder what happened to them and who put the documents in the box and buried it?

12th Jan, 2014

Mrs Moxon

Wow you’ve found out a lot of things about this box! I wonder how it ended up buried on our school land?
Who it might have belonged to? There were a lot of papers inside, are they very interesting? I only saw the one with the broom handle to remove incendiaries, (what on earth is one of those?)
Good luck with your research. Loved the art and the planning sheets I saw, see you again soon!

13th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

Thank you Mrs Moxon. We have been very busy researching the box. You’ll have to pop in again this week and see what else we have found out.

Did you know both of my great grandads were in ww2. This is the important event that happened and made us free. One of my great grandads repaired army tanks and My great grandad Wells repaired Lancaster bombers in the RAF. I have got lots of things from the war that we keep safe in our drawer. My favourites are the machine gun bullet shells.

13th Jan, 2014

Mrs Harrison

Wow Jacob, you’ll have to tell us more about this next week.

This is my time travel box I made, it has got my christening bracelet in and my first pair of shoes and my trophy from dancing and my photos and my favourite ornaments. I will bring it into school tomorrow 🙂

That’s a brilliant idea Jessica. When you bring it in you can tell us all why you chose to put those things in it and why they are special to you. I’ve got some special things I’ve saved as my daughter Lucy has grown up, I saved her first shoes as well and all the Christmas and birthday cards she made. It’s lovely to look back and remember Lucy’s 22 years old now and she still likes to look at all the things I’ve saved.

14th Jan, 2014

Mrs. Moxon

I would love to call in and see more, thank you for the invitation.
I would put lots of photo’s in a time capsule, people, so you could laugh at the fashions of the time or even feel envious that they have gone! Places, they change so much over time but are often still recognisable. I saw a picture of Allotts corner, it looked strange because there was no traffic or telephone lines!

Harry you’ve brought some amazing artefacts, please say thank you to your Grandad for finding them out for us to look at. Your Grandad must have been very brave to earn all those medals.

15th Jan, 2014

Lucy

This is the petrol ration book my Grandad had when it was the war. The petrol was needed for the army so there wasn’t much left for people to use in their cars and they had to use a voucher to get fuel. When they had used all their vouchers they couldn’t have any more petrol.
File Uploaded

15th Jan, 2014

What a really special artefact Lucy. It must have been very difficult to manage with only a little petrol, I bet lots of cars ran out of fuel.
