As part of our work looking at Britsh values and democracy we visited the Town Hall on Monday to find out more about local government and also to meet the Mayor and Mayoress.
We enjoyed a drink and snack in the Reception Room with Mr Mayor and the Mayoress. Then we had a tour of the building and visited the Council Chambers where democracy in Barnsley flourishes!

After a very informative discussion about life in the Council Chambers we were shown the Civic Mace and found out that it could be used to defend the Mayor and the Queen and weighs 8 kg.

Then we visited the Mayor’s Parlour which has changed little since the Town Hall opened in 1933.

We saw the Mayor’s robes and hat which are used on formal occasions.
It was a fantastic day visiting the Town Hall, finding out lots of information and meeting the Mayor and Mayoress of Barnsley.
