Good afternoon and welcome back,

I hope you have all enjoyed the Christmas holiday celebrations and are ready for the start of a new year and an exciting new term and Hoyland Common Primary.  The new year has certainly started with a ‘bang’ as the whole school has taken part in ‘Science Week’. It really has been one of my favourite weeks of the year; I have been so impressed with the investigations, practical learning and outcomes produced by all classes this week.

Foundation Stage have been busy investigating how to free their animals from the ice by experimenting with melting techniques, while Y1 have been researched how the stomach digests food using cabbage – I will apologise now for the smell!

In year 2, our scientists have investigated the effects of different drinks on our teeth, and have made some surprising conclusions! I have also been impressed with Y3/4 for ‘using the force’ to create table top games using magnets. I have loved coming in to play!

Finally, the Y5/6 scientists have been hard at work in attempt to save Mr Tallant, who is lost in the jungle, from a plane crash using their knowledge of forces; and have also been investigating how displacement works in water, in order to save his ship from sinking – Mr T does like to get himself into some sticky situations!

I  would like to end by once again thanking our stars for the fantastic effort they have put in. This week, pupils have been selected for excellent effort and enthusiasm in science, clear explanations in maths and for being a great role model for others. Well done to all!

So, as the new year begins, we all look forward to a new term. A term that will once again be filled with exciting topics, visits and learning for all at Hoyland Common Primary.

Welcome back and a happy new year to all.

Mr F
