Northern lights appears when solar wind particles bond together with air molecules in the earth’s atmosphere, changing their energy into light. The best time to see the lights is late august through april when the nights are dark.

The northern lights are really pretty dancing light shows that can be different colours, we don’t see them here very often because the best places to see them are in the arctic circle in places like Norway and Iceland. they appear around the poles and are called Auroras. The reason the lights happen are collisions of different gas particles in our atmospere with electrical charged particles from the sun that come into our atmosphere and when they hit eachother they make different colours.
The most common colour is green and this colour is caused by oxygen molecules, oxygen molecules also make red colour but these molecules are a lot higher than the ones that cause green light.
we can also see purple and blue colours and these are caused by nitrogen molecules.
The lights around the north pole are Aurora Borealis and in the south they are called Aurora Australis, they can be 50 miles above the Earth but go as high as 400 miles, a lot higher than Tim in his space station.

The nearer you live to the Arctic, the better chance you have of seeing the Northern Lights, but if you’re lucky you may see them further south. They can sometimes be seen in the north of Scotland as well as Russia, Canada and the northern United States.

The aurora starts on the surface of the sun when solar activity gives out a cloud of gas. If the gas reaches earth, it hits the Earth’s magnetic field and causes changes to happen. These changes make charged particles which then go into the Polar areas. The particles are boosted in energy in the upper atmosphere and when they hit with oxygen and nitrogen atoms they produce bright light. Auroras is called polar lights and is a natural display of colour in the sky in the Arctic and Antarctic. Charged particles give out light in different colours and patterns that change a lot. The earth magnetic field changes the shapes. In northern area the coloured lights are called aurora borealis or northern lights named after a Roman goddess and Greek name for North wind. They can be found in southern areas too.

Me and my mum googled about the northern lights, also known as aurora borealis..
It says the aurora borealis, or northern lights happens when solar wind particles hit air molecules in the earth’s atmosphere, transferring their energy into light
The bright dancing lights of the aurora are collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth’s atmosphere.
The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and Southern Hemisphere
They appear in many colours, but pale green and pink are the most common. Shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet have also been seen.
The lights can appear as patches, scattered clouds of light and even can look like streamers, arcs, rippling or shooting rays that light up the sky
Aurora borealis actually means “dawn of the north”
The Northern lights also known as Aurora Borealis are seen during the winter months in the Arctic. They swirl, dip, whirl and dance their colourful light across the dark Arctic sky. Their ever changing patterns move up and down, near and far. They have a cloud like glow coloured in shades of purple, blue, green, yellow and sometimes red.

The bright dancing lights of the aurora are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earths atmosphere. The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and Southern Hemisphere. The name Aurora comes from the Latin word sunrise or the Roman goddess of dawn. Aurora also occur on other planets in our solar system including Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Mars.similar to earth’s aurora the lights have been seen close to other planets magnetic poles.
