This week we have been learning about money. We have used different coins to make amounts so that David could pay for new equipment for his journey across Tanzania. We tried making £1 using the least number of coins possible. Can you work how to do it? Now we are beginning to add amounts together so that David can buy more than one item. Can you think of how we might do it?

Hello Y2. I’ve just managed to connect to the internet and seen that you are busy learning about adding amounts of money together to help me shop for my kit. I could use your ideas to pay for one item at once but it would be quicker if I could add the amounts together and pay all in one go. I know you’ve used something called Partitioning to help you but I’m not sure what to do. Do you think you could help me?
David, here’s how to do it!
53p + 45p
You need to partition the numbers first
50 + 3 + 40 + 5
Now add the 10s together.
50 + 40= 90
Now add the units.
3 + 5 = 8
Now add the 90 to the 8. That makes 98p
I can make 80p. 20p+ 20p+20p+20p is 80p.
This is fantastic work Y2. It was great to see the methods you were using to add 2, 2 digit numbers together yesterday and even adding 2, 3 digit numbers together and converting from pounds to pence. And what a great explanation of it Finlay!

High, I have just been told I am a member of great learning council and I can see loads of great learning – I think I mint be able to help by starting with 20p then add 30 that makes 50 then add 20 that makes 70 then add 30p and then that will make £1.00 you will also need 20 5ps to make £1.00
