I hope you all had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year and am very pleased to welcome you back to what I am sure is going to be another incredibly exciting term at Hoyland Common Primary School.

It was wonderful to see so many of you getting involved in the extreme reading challenge during the festive period, there were over 100 comments on the Year 2 blog alone!

The beginning of the week saw the start of new topics for all year groups, Y1 are looking at Space and the world around us, Y2 have started a fun and interesting topic on Superheroes, Y3&4 are learning all about Dinosaurs and Y5&6 are off on an unexpected journey into middle earth. I’m sure you will all be hearing much more about your child’s new topics in the near future and that they will enjoy the huge variety of visits and activities that are planned.

The stars of the week this week have been selected for a superb variety of reasons including setting themselves some aspirational goals for 2015, having an amazing start to the new year, brilliant independent writing, great work in numeracy, for excellent blending of CVC words and finally for being kind and helpful to their friends.

The attendance for school last term was 96.3% fractionally below the school target, let’s try and improve this over the next 2 terms. The attendance for school this week was 97.2%

This term will also see the start of booster classes for Y6 pupils ready for the run up to SATs and I am sure they will be as successful and as fun as usual. Y5 pupils will complete their Bikeability training at the end of January and Y4 pupils will be visiting Sherwood Forest for their residential visit just before Easter. In KS1 there will be a great opportunity for parents to come in to school and read with their children on Wednesday morning and / or Thursday afternoon, please do come along and see all the different ways we encourage early reading.
