Here is the original design for the first Co-op shop in Hoyland. We understand that the building is still there, but can you find out if it is? Where is it? Is it still a shop? What is it now? You can ask someone who might remember. You could go for a walk with a grown-up to try and find it. You could search the internet. Blog whatever you find out.

Me and my mum pass this shop on the way to grandma and grandads house. It is now Double D Decor but it still has the same patterns on it.
I think you could be correct.

I have found it Mr Clare it is still on West street as a paint and decorating shop called Dickinsons. We bought some paint there and they have fabric in the part that looks like a house. I spoke to a lady who worked in the one on King street when she was young that is now a catalogue shop. She said people liked to go in for butter and cheese as they cut it with wire and wrapped it in wax paper they then used for baking. She said there was also a shop at Hoyland Common and on Wentworth Street at Birdwell.

Today we went on a mission to find the old coop shop, we wlked to Hoyland to find the building. My mum and dad didn’t grow up here so non of our family knew anything about it, first we went to the library and asked in there if anyone knew wher it was but they didnt so wer go a book about local history to read. we went into some shops and asked the shopkeepers and one lady knew where it was but it wasn’t where mum had thought it was. we walked to the shop which is still there and still looks a bit like it did a long time ago. Now its a decorators shop called Dickinsons. On the side of the shop is a large stone with writing carved into it it says Barnsley British Cooperative and the name of the president was Edward Tune it says the vice president was Sam Jones and Arthur John Wroe and the secetarys name was Mr Chase E Whitham and 6 other names of people who were directors. We took some pictures of the shop.

My mum used to work for Cooperative Retail Services for 9 years but was made redundant in 1998 when the offices moved from Barnsley to Rochdale, she worked in the cash offices first then moved to the merchandise office where she dealt with all the paperwork from the furniture departments from 11 department stores, the offices used to be on Wellington St in Barnsley above a Coop supermarket, the enterance to the supermarket was on Market st and there were lots of other Coop shops on Market st, the office then moved to Springfield street close to where the Coop dairy milk was delivered from.

This shop is in west street in Hoyland it is now Dickinsons Decorators. It opened as a grocery store in 1924 and closed in 1970. I know this from my grandads book all about Hoyland.

Or after asking family ……is it where Allendale is?
The original Co-op is now Dickinsons Decorators, but some other locals said that Allendales used to be a Co-op. Maybe it was. You could find out.

Me and my mum went to see the old Co-op in Hoyland, it is now a decorating shop called Dickinson’s. It is opposite the war memorial. I walk past this shop everyday when i take my dog Ruby a walk, i also drive past it every day on my way to and from school. On the side of the shop is a large stone with writing carved into it, it says Barnsley British Cooperative. I never knew this was the Co-op.

I rang my grandad Eddie and he says its the old decorators shop on west street as his mums friend worked there when it was the shop.

The old coop is Dickinsons decor shop now but I have found out by asking my friends grandad that the Barcleys bank use to be a coop too and were Hoyland furniture store is use to be the coop drapery too.
That’s really interesting.
First I asked my mum and dad if they knew anything about it but they didn’t know anything about it because they grew up in Sheffield so I looked on Google and found out where it is and it is on West Street in Hoyland. The building is still there but it has been decorated in the colours they wanted them to be and to make it look beautiful. The building is still a shop and the shop is called the Dickinsons.
